Aino & Alvar Aalto, Scandinavian Modern, collector's item Very rare collector's pieces, a of pair of stools by Aino and Alvar Alto, created for the The Paimio Sanatorium, circa 1932. Manufactured by O.y. Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas A.b., Finland. The stools are made from painted plywood and turned metal. Beautiful vintage condition. Remains of original paint and ward number underneath the seats. Thomas Kellein, Alvar & Aino Aalto Design; Collection Bischofberger, Zurich, 2005, pp. 58 and 61 Background information: Paimio Sanatorium is a former tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Southwest Finland, designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Aalto received the design commission having won the architectural competition for the project held in 1929. The building was completed in 1933, and soon after received critical acclaim both in Finland and abroad. Aalto and his wife Aino designed all of the sanatorium's furniture and interiors. Aino Aalto: Aino Marsio, born in Helsinki in 1894, received her degree in architecture from the Helsinki Polytechnic and began working for Alvar Aalto’s architecture office in 1924. Soon after, she married Alvar Aalto and, in addition to a new surname, gained a lifelong partner. The couple worked together closely until Aino’s death in 1949. The significance of Aino Aalto's life's work is immeasurable; she has left her strong, unprejudiced and modern handprint in the fields of design and architecture. “When she is mentioned, one always says: the legendary Aino Aalto. She is the most aesthetic person I have ever met.” Such was the description of Aino by a friend, Maire Gullichsen, in an interview in 1976. Aino Aalto was a pioneer of Finnish design in the international arena. Her exhibition architecture for Artek's stand at the Milan Triennal in 1936 was awarded the Grand Prix prize and at the same Triennal, her glass series won the gold medal. Aino Aalto also designed buildings, interiors, furniture, and textiles. Aino Aalto'swork has been easy to ignore, for example, by naming her merely the muse of her husband, Alvar Aalto. The couple’s cooperation was so close that it is nowadays impossible to differentiate what was Aino’s or Alvar’s part in the many designs created by the architectural firm Arkkitehtitoimisto Aalto from the 1920s to the 1940s. Some of the drawings are marked as made by Aino and some carry both their names.
