About the Item

This sofa is model BR 49, often referred to as Model BR39/49, a design by Martin Visser for 't Spectrum the Netherlands. This sofa one of the most rare and sought after daybeds of the Dutch Midcentury. In contradiction to the other sofa daybed by Visser, model BR 02 which is a one person sleeper, BR 49 can be transformed into a two person sleeper. With a clever rotating system the seating can be unfolded and a double daybed appears. This sofa is somewhat more robust than the BR 02. It is also very heavy compared to Visser his other daybeds. Because of its more robust appearance it looks more appealing and comfortable. Were the BR 02 want to hide in the room, the BR 49 wants to show itself. But always without losing its minimal Dutch Mid-century looks. Although ‘t Spectrum marketed it as a sofa with sleeping capabilities, we are convinced the double mattress was not only designed to be a bed. It can be eminently used as a lounging sofa. When you unfold the seating you can stretch your legs and find a comfortable position after a long day work or on a lazy afternoon. We completely re-upholstered the sofa with new green fabric. It has a black metal frame, which we left in original condition to let it keep its history. We also have another one with a chromed frame. Martin Visser: Martin Visser was one of the leading Dutch designers of the midcentury together with Cees Braakman, Gijs van der Sluis, Coen de Vries, Rob Parry and Friso Kramer. Famous designs of him are his BR02 sleeper sofa, Osaka and SZ01 lounge chair, wooden slat bench, KW85 sideboard or credenza, TE06 dining table, TZ41 coffee table and SE06 dining or side chair.
