Antique Chinese Hand Carved Chair with Natural Wood Patina, Red and Gold Accents

About the Item

An antique Chinese wooden chair from the 19th century, with hand carved panels, red and gold accents and natural wood patina. This Chinese chair captures our attention with its exquisite silhouette and intricate carving. Our eye is immediately drawn to the richly carved back, topped with an out-scrolling rail and adorned with delicate scrolls. The central splat is pierced with an intricate arrangement of scrolls and adorned with a red and gold scene showcasing a Chinese figure carved in low-relief, carrying an object, and walking in front of a low wall accented by a tree on the right. The open arms, presenting exquisite scrolls, are resting on the rectangular wooden seat. Raised on four straight legs connected to one another through side stretchers and accented with curling spandrels, this antique Chinese chair is appealing from any side. Used as an accent chair or desk chair, it will bring a refined touch to any home. We have another similar chair available that would work wonderfully with this chair to create a pair.

Prior to the 10th century, Chinese society eschewed raised seats in favor of mats. The rising popularity of chairs and other forms of elevated seating led craftsmen to adapt traditional cabinetry and architecture techniques to the human body. In the case of these Yuanyi, or round chairs, the flowing crestrail is a direct descendant of the simple armrests that had traditionally supported individuals on mats in their homes. This homage to an ancestral form, combined with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques, created an elegant, functional chair that has endured for centuries and inspired many contemporary furniture designers...
