About

SATURDAY SALE Mid-Century Modern three-piece sectional sofa designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin's 1964 "infinity!" collection. Three pieces include a long three cushion sofa with one right arm, a two cushion love seat with one left arm (which can be combined directly with the three-seat to make one long sofa) and an armless hexagonal corner section with a double seat cushion. The left arm 77 inch piece is a three cushion sofa (No. 548). The right arm piece is a two cushioned 48” sectional love seat. The middle hexagonal corner (No. 562) has 2 back cushions with a continuous seat cushion. The wings measure 14” the back 60” and the front 34”. Original upholstery is from 1964 so it would benefit from being recovered. We are selling as is but we estimate it would require ~42 yards of material to recover. The green fabric is 78% nylon and 12% wool. It had been Scotch Guarded so there is no staining however there are a couple of small holes from screws and there are a few missing fabric covered buttons from the tufted cushions. The cushions, the springs and structure are in good order. No rubber was used so the cushions are still quite supple. No rubber = no crumbling. The back cushions are Dacron filled; the three-seat cushions are nine-buttoned and are poly/Dacron filled. The legs are straight round walnut stained wood and screw in place. As per the Infinity! collection brochure other leg options available were tapered walnut, teak and tubular chrome or square chrome so you can make these changes without sacrificing integrity to the original design.

About the Designer

Milo Baughman

Milo Baughman was one of the most agile and adept modern American furniture designers of the late 20th century. A prolific lecturer and writer on the benefits of good design — he taught for years at Brigham Young University — Baughman (whose often-scrambled surname is pronounced BAWF-man) focused almost exclusively on residential furnishings, having a particular talent for lounge chairs, perhaps the most sociable piece of furniture.Like his fellow adoptive Californians Charles and Ray Eames, Baughman’s furniture has a relaxed and breezy air. Baughman was famously opposed to ostentatious and idiosyncratic designs that were made to excite attention. While many of his chair designs are enlivened by such effects as tufted upholstery, Baughman tended to let his materials carry the aesthetic weight, most often relying on chair and table frames made of sturdy and sleek flat-bar chromed metal, and chairs, tables and cabinets finished with highly-figured wood veneers.Like his colleagues Karl Springer and the multifarious Pierre Cardin, Baughman’s designs are emblematic of the 1970s: sleek, sure and scintillating. As you will see from the furniture presented on 1stDibs, Milo Baughman’s designs are ably employed as either the heart of a décor or its focal point.
