About

This gorgeous black leather executive management desk chair is by Otto Zapf for Knoll International, circa 1985. Constructed of heavily cushioned sections, with the top head section and arms removable. The chair base is height and tilt / recline adjustable and sits on top of a four star base with casters. The label underneath indicates this particular example was made by Knoll International between 1981 and 1988, based on this particular label and Knoll's address during that period. This makes it an early year 'original' example of the design - ideal for collectors and interior designers with connoisseur clients. The large size of this chair allows people of all sizes to enjoy its supreme comfort. Thick black leather over heavily padded cushions makes you feel like you are sitting on a cloud, ideal for those who have to work long hours and need a comfortable executive desk chair. We used to think the Time Life chair by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller was the most comfortable office chair - until we sat in this. This designer on-trend highback leather management desk chair by Otto Zapf for Knoll International would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as a side chair, dining, cafe or breakfast table chair, bedside chair, fireside chair, dressing or changing room chair, hallway chair, entryway or mudroom chair, nursing or reading chair, conference room chair, office or desk chair, guest chair, lobby chair, lounge chair or occasional chair ideal in virtually any setting. MEASUREMENTS: (Height adjustable by 2") H 35.75" to 37.75" x W 32" D 32" Seat Height: 20" to 22" Seat Depth: 19.5" Arm Height: 26" to 28" CONDITION: Very good vintage condition with light attractive patina to leather. About the Manufacturer

Knoll

As a company that produced many of the most famous and iconic furniture designs of the 20th century, Knoll was a chief influence in the rise of modern design in the United States. Led by Florence Knoll, the firm would draw stellar talents such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen into its compass. Their work would help change the face of the American home and office. The company was formed in 1938 by the German immigrant Hans Knoll. He first worked with his fellow ex-pat, the Danish designer Jens Risom, who created furniture with flowing lines made of wood. While Risom served in World War II, in 1943 Knoll met his future wife, Florence Schust. She had studied and worked with eminent emigré leaders of the Bauhaus, including Mies, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. She won Knoll over with Bauhaus notions of industrial arts, and an aesthetic that featured flat and tubular metal frames and angular forms. When Hans died in a car crash in 1955, Florence Knoll was appointed head of the company. It was as much through her holistic approach to design — a core division of the firm was dedicated to planning office systems — as Knoll's mid-century modern furnishings themselves that she brought about the sleek and efficient transformation of the American workplace.Today, classic Knoll furnishings remain staples of modern design collections and decors. A history of modern design is written in pieces such as Mies’ elegant Barcelona chair, Saarinen’s pedestal Tulip chair, Breuer’s tubular steel Wassily lounge chair and the grid-patterned Diamond chair by Harry Bertoia. As you can see from the items on 1stDibs, these designs and others have become timeless emblems of the progressive spirit and sleek sophistication of the best of modernism.
