Warren Platner for Knoll Lounge Chairs in Red Wool Boucle, Near Mint Set of Four

About

This near-mint condition set of four (4) Warren Platner for Knoll lounge chairs (Model 1715L) are upholstered in a gorgeous red wool boucle fabric over a nickel plated polished steel frame. The nubby red boucle fabric is a beautiful upgrade over the standard knit or velvet fabric that is more commonly seen. Steel frame is clean, bright and free of rust and fabric is clean and free of stains. No odors, chairs were in a smoke free and animal free environment. Entire set is near-mint and was extremely well-cared for, to the point that one would think these were sitting in a museum setting. The Warren Platner Wire collection was debuted in 1966 by Knoll Associates then later produced by Knoll International. This listing is priced for the entire set of four (4) lounge chairs. These club chairs would work great in a Mid-Century Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a contemporary or Postmodern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Being highly durable, this set of armchairs would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Product story: With his experience in the firm of Eero Saarinen and Associates, it is not surprising that the mantel for the second generation of pedestal and wire furniture fell on the creative shoulders of Warren Platner. Reflecting a dramatic shift in cultural values, modernism became more expressive in the 1960s. Platner felt there was an opportunity to merge the competing aesthetics of the time. “I began to think about what I thought furniture, specifically a chair, really might be, starting with the philosophy that it isn’t going to be aggressively technological, or aggressively handicraft…I, as a designer, felt there was room for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful kind of design that appeared in period style like Louis XV, but it could have a more rational base instead of being applied decoration…I thought why separate support from the object. Just make it all one thing. Starts at the floor and comes up and envelops me, supports me…What I wanted to achieve was a chair that, number one, was complementary to the person sitting in it, or to the person in the space between the wall and the chair — what the chair did for the person in respect to the scale of the person and the space.” Construction: - Shell is molded fiberglass with molded latex foam cushion. - Base constructed of vertical steel rods welded to circular horizontal and edge-framing rods. - Nickel finish is plated and polished. - Clear plastic extrusion ring on bottom of the base for a smooth bottom surface. Condition: Excellent near mint condition, ready for immediate use. Frames are clean and clear of rust. No breaks, no bent wires, sturdy and structurally sound. Fabric is clean with no stains, odors, tears or issues. While this is a vintage set, all aspects of chairs are excellent. Measurements: H 30.25" x W 36.5" x D 25.5" Seat height 18.5".

About Knoll (Manufacturer)

As a company that produced many of the most famous and iconic furniture designs of the 20th century, Knoll was a chief influence in the rise of modern design in the United States. Led by Florence Knoll, the firm would draw stellar talents such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen into its compass. Their work would help change the face of the American home and office.

The company was formed in 1938 by the German immigrant Hans Knoll. He first worked with his fellow ex-pat, the Danish designer Jens Risom, who created furniture with flowing lines made of wood. While Risom served in World War II, in 1943 Knoll met his future wife, Florence Schust. She had studied and worked with eminent emigré leaders of the Bauhaus, including Mies, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. She won Knoll over with Bauhaus notions of industrial arts, and an aesthetic that featured flat and tubular metal frames and angular forms. When Hans died in a car crash in 1955, Florence Knoll was appointed head of the company. It was as much through her holistic approach to design—a core division of the firm was dedicated to planning office systems—as Knoll furnishings themselves that she brought about the sleek and efficient transformation of the American workplace.

Today, classic Knoll furnishings remain staples of modern design collections and decors. A history of modern design is written in pieces such as Mies’ elegant Barcelona Chair, Saarinen’s pedestal Tulip chair, Breuer’s tubular steel Wassily chair and the grid-patterned Diamond chair by Harry Bertoia. As you can see from the items on the following pages, these designs and others have become timeless emblems of the progressive spirit and sleek sophistication of the best of Modernism.
