Takeshi Nii for Trend Pacific “NY” Folding Chairs & Ottoman Set

About

An exceptional late 1950s three-piece NY folding chairs & ottoman set by Takeshi Nii for Trend Pacific Inc. Inspired by the iconic Hollywood director’s chair and key elements of Scandinavian Modern design, the NY chair—which references both the designer’s family name and the Danish word for “new”—was designed in 1958, and added to MoMA’s permanent collection in 1970. Set comprised of two easily compactible and portable low-slung, high-back, reclined canvas lounge chairs and a matching ottoman. In almost like-new condition thanks to the original owner having stowed it away essentially unused shortly after purchase. Chrome finish nickel plated tubular steel folding base supports a chocolate-colored heavy cotton canvas sling with solid beechwood thick rod sides. When viewed in profile, the NY chair’s minimalist, ergonomically-informed lines closely resemble those of fellow Japanese designer Mitsumasa Sugasawa’s Heron rocker for Tendo Mokko, which it predates by nearly a decade. Retains oversized showroom tag and “NY CHAIR” logotype label. Ottoman is H 14.38 in. x W 19 in. x D 16.5 in.
