  • Living Room Rattan Set by Janine Abraham & Dirk Jan Rol - Chairs, Pouf, Mirror
By Janine Abraham and Dirk Jan Rol
    Located in Roma, IT
Spectacular Mid-Century French Riviera complete living room set designed by Janine Abraham & Dirk Jan Rol and made in France during the late 1950s. This incredibly rare sculptural rattan set is considered the "Nirvana" of French Riviera organic design. The set includes two twin basketware lounge chairs, a round ottoman and a large oval mirror. Everything is in exceptional conditions and comes from the same project, making the wonderful light honey color of the rattan extremely even between the different objects. The basketware chairs were fully hand-crafted in curved rattan and hand-woven wicker. The perfect proportions of these chairs are mind-blowing. The center of the seating is enriched by a wonderful work in woven wicker. The seats are supported by a stunning black enameled frame in bent metal. The geometric frame and legs show Rol’s background in architecture and add modernity to the organic material of the seat. The ottoman has a round hourglass-shaped structure made in single pieces of rattan curved at different angles and kept together by a perfect work of woven wicker. The chairs and the ottoman are completed by a round cushion in an elegant white boucle fabric. The spectacular build quality make this set light yet extremely sturdy. The large oval mirror that completes the set is also in amazing conditions and follows the same design of the rest of set. The uniqueness of this set and the amazing conditions make it incredibly charming and a must have for all the French Riviera style lovers. She met Dutch-born designer Dirk Jan Rol at the studio of Jacques Dumond in 1955. The following year, in 1956, the pair showed their first collaborative work at the Salon des Artistes Decorateurs. Abraham and Rol launched their own agency in 1957, creating modernist furniture characterized by clean, elegant lines—notably the rattan and enameled metal Lemon and Corolle chairs (both 1957), the sleek Sapelli wood and lacquered metal Plywood Chair (1960), and the steel and black vinyl Sofa...

  • Lounge Chair by Janine Abraham & Dirk Jan Rol for Rougier, France, 1950s
By Janine Abraham and Dirk Jan Rol
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This beautiful woven rattan chair combines Janine Abraham’s imagination with Dirk Jan Rol’s architectural construction skills. From the circular woven center to the shell of the seat, the craft of the designer and manufacturer is outstanding. The basket seat is supported by a black lacquered metal frame. The geometric frame and legs show Rol’s background in architecture and add modernity to the organic material of the seat. This chair is equally eye-catching from up close and from a distance. This mid-century model exemplifies why Abraham and Rol became successful, which was primarily thanks to their rattan and metal furniture. In 1958, the designer couple’s metal and rattan furniture won the second prize at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and their "Soleil" armchair the gold medal at the World Exhibition in Brussels. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with its age and use. Rattan overall has a beautiful patina. Some rattan varnish has come off, some discoloration. Two strings have possible been repaired in the past. She trained at the École Camondo in Paris until 1952. Following her graduation, she became a pupil of Maxime Old and René-Jean Caillette. Dirk Jan Rol acquired training as a cabinetmaker in the Netherlands, his country of origin, then as an interior designer at the National School of Decorative Arts. They both worked in different workshops of architects and decorators after their studies. In 1955, the two designers met at the studio of Jacques Dumond. The following year, in 1956, the pair showed their first collaborative work at the Salon des Artistes Decorateurs. The same year, the duo designed a range of rattan seats for the publisher Rougier. Abraham and Rol launched their own agency in 1957, creating modernist furniture characterized by clean, elegant lines - notably the rattan and enamelled metal Lemon chair (1957), and the steel and black vinyl Sofa...
