Lounge Chairs - Safari style Danish Midcentury chairs by Børge Jensen & Sønner

About the Item

A very rare pair of Danish midcentury Børge Jensen & Sønner ‘Safari’ lounge chairs in canvas and beech. First designed and produced in the mid-1960s these chairs are a development by the original manufacturer of Børge Jensen & Sønner’s ‘Safari’ chair into a more comfortable and beautifully appointed lounge chair. Featuring a cross bar at the top (a development to the original chair design made by the manufacturer) along with a weighted head/neck cushion trimmed in aniline leather the chairs also benefit from a cushion infill to offer greater comfort in the seat. They are very rare and I have not seen a pair in this format ever featured for sale anywhere on the internet. Produced by Bernstorffsminde Møbelfabrik in Denmark the chairs feature Børge Jensen’s beautifully crafted trademark finger joints and are constructed of bent Beech wood and heavy oatmeal canvas. The chair also comes complete with the original leather straps beneath the seat and can be disassembled with ease by virtue of the countersunk bolts. The woodwork has been completely renovated and the original upholstery is in excellent condition having been removed and cleaned. They are a stunning centrepiece, beautifully designed and very comfortable. A classic example of how great design should work; a simple structure with a simple sling that allows space around the form to highlight the excellent joinery work.

  • Hans J. Wegner Danish 1940s Leather and Oak Model A721 Executive Chair
    By Hans J. Wegner
    Located in Highclere, Newbury
An exceedingly rare Hans J. Wegner Model A721 cognac leather and oak early Danish Mid-century executive chair for Planmøbel, Denmark 1940. Originally designed by Wegner following his work for Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller’s ground breaking Rådhus (Aarhus City Hall) project in 1940, the A721, stands out as one of his earliest known chair designs. Along with a number of other chairs like the B123, the Rådhus chairs were handcrafted by Michael Laursen, I.C.A Nielsen and Planmøbel specifically for the project. Originally made in small numbers all the chairs were of uniform construction with solid oak frames matched to leather upholstery and with thick, solid jointing work that complemented the angular forms. Here we also see for the first time, Wegner’s use of the flared arm rest that were a signature design element for every armchair produced for the Rådhus. These flares were either carved into the wood (as in the Council chamber chairs...
