Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair & Stool for Fritz Hansen with Original Leather, Signed

US$11,100Asking Priceper set

About

This iconic black leather egg chair by Arne Jacobsen is an all-original 1965 production by Fritz Hansen and signed underneath both pieces with the original date-stamped foil labels. The Classic and timeless (original) black leather is one of the most sought after and desirable of options, and the condition is superb for its age. This is the perfect gift for the consummate collector who has it all and wants only the best of the best. A note to interior designers and collectors: If an egg chair is not signed with its original label, we highly advise taking caution when purchasing. Most egg chairs that are found without labels are copies of the design by other manufacturers and not the authentic chair. Also, egg chairs with replaced leather are less desirable and collectible than ones with original leather such as this example. And new production versions by Fritz Hansen, while are high quality and authentic, lack the collectors-appeal as the original production examples from the 1960s. Fritz Hansen used date stamped foil labels in the 1960s and 1970s, so you can identify its authenticity and date of production from these labels, we highly advise sticking with chairs that have this and avoid taking the risks of buying an un-signed chair. The biomorphic egg chair cradles and supports the human body while allowing for conversation or privacy. This lounge chair stands on a cast aluminum four star base, offering 360° of movement and retains the original Fritz Hansen foil manufacturers label under the seat. The chair is paired with a black leatherette egg footstool which is also signed with its original Fritz Hansen foil label as can be seen in the photos. The stool was added later on to the chair as it was produced a year later than the chair, and is the same color as the chair but in a leatherette. If you wish, we can reupholster the ottoman with black leather although we feel it works perfectly well with the chair in its current upholstery. The Fritz Hansen egg chair was originally conceptualized for the SAS Royal Copenhagen Hotel, Denmark, which Jacobsen designed in its entirety from the building itself to the flatware. This quintessentially iconic Fritz Hansen egg chair and ottoman would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a contemporary or Postmodern room. Also consider mixing it up in a traditional, transitional, classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an Apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as a side chair, dining, cafe or breakfast table chair, bedside chair, fireside chair, dressing or changing room chair, hallway chair, entryway or mudroom chair, nursing or reading chair, conference room chair, office or desk chair, guest chair, easy chair, lobby chair, lounge chair or occasional chair ideal in virtually any setting. Perfect gift for the consummate collector who has it all and wants only the best of the best. About the Design

Egg Chair

Designed by Arne Jacobsen
Designed in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the Egg chair is a Scandinavian classic that has over the years become a fixture of corporate offices. It bears every mark of Arne Jacobsen's (1902–71) outsized perfectionism, for which the Danish architect was widely known. The Egg chair was notable for its overtly organic appearance, which Jacobsen achieved with craft-based padding and upholstery finishing. Unlike the furniture maker’s previous range of shell chairs designed in laminated wood for Fritz Hansen, the Egg — and the Swan chair along with it — reflected a soulful new vision of modernity. Both created for the accomodation property, which opened in 1960, the chairs were meant to contrast with the SAS Royal Hotel’s straight lines as well as showcase Jacobsen’s eye for interiors. A graduate from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Jacobsen was a polymath who made just about everything — light fixtures, ashtrays, silverware and even door handles. For the SAS Air Terminal and Royal Hotel, he handled every detail, from textiles to furnishings. In the 1940s, the one-time mason found considerable success as an industrial designer, most notably with the Ant chair and Series 7 chairs for Fritz Hansen. Jacobsen was influenced by modernism and designers like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Forward-looking projects like the “House of the Future” — codesigned with Flemming Lassen in 1929 and featuring a then-revolutionary automatic garage door opener — cemented his status as an innovator. Throughout his career, Jacobsen earned many awards, including the prestigious RIBA Bronze Medal in 1963. With the Egg chair, Jacobsen continued his ongoing experimentation with synthetic materials. First, he devised small-scale clay models in his garage. The prototypes' finished shells were made of fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane foam, padded with cast latex foam rubber and then, upholstered with leather — or, in the cost-conscious hotel’s case, fabric. Today, the Egg chair is supported by welded steel tubing and is mounted on a lightweight aluminum base. It is available from Fritz Hansen.
