About the Item

This wooden lacquered set of seats is composed of two armchairs and a sofa made in the Napoleon III style. The blackened wood constituting the structure of the whole is decorated with partially gilded paintings evoking Japanese and Chinese lacquers. They depict scenes of Japanese life populated by characters. The lines of the furniture are enhanced with gold, giving the whole a refined decoration. In the second half of the 19th century, the bourgeoisie was fond of luxurious objects. The opulent styles of the Ancien Régime were brought up to date and assembled to form original, eclectic and highly decorative works. In this context, blackened wood is a privileged material in this taste for deep blacks so particular to the Second Empire. These dark woods blend perfectly with the precious inlaid materials and rich colored fabrics that warm up the interiors. This lounge, mounted on wheels, is both comfortable and refined. The Napoleon III style gives great importance to decoration and ornament, as evidenced by the floral paintings on the uprights of these pieces of furniture or the fringes finishing the armrests. Indeed, we can imagine a whole of this magnitude in a Parisian salon characteristic of the Second Republic. This period, which sounded the pomp and opulence in the interiors, was sometimes referred to as the "triumph of the upholsterers". The rich fabrics and fabrics adorned by the bourgeois apartments are the result of an ever-increasing quest for comfort. Many paintings testify to these sumptuous interiors whose reputation has toured Europe. The Salon of Princess Mathilde, cousin of Napoleon III, is one of the jewels of the Empire. Abundantly represented, it allows us to imagine for a moment these fabulous interiors which were undoubtedly the theatre of this charming ensemble presented. From the mid-19th century, forced by the United States, Japan opened up to the world after more than 200 years of decline. The West is fascinated by this exotic world. With the trade treaty signed in 1858 between France and Japan, and Japan's participation in the Universal Expositions since 1867 in Paris, artists discovered works of art that they would reclaim. Japanese prints provide them with new patterns and new solutions to represent space. Japanism is fuelled by print books and travelers’ testimonies that circulate throughout Europe. It gave birth to a whole new ornamental repertoire. This phenomenon affects all arts including furniture, ceramics, painting, etc. This pink velvet set with Japanese lacquer decorations is a perfect example.
