About the Item

Art Deco "Cloud" lounge seating suite by Harry & Lou Epstein, England, 1930s. Sold as a three-piece set: Pair of lounge chairs and three-seat sofa, upholstered in cream leather with wraparound satin birch veneers. The cloud theme was a feature of Epstein brother’s furniture including lounge suites, salon chairs, dining suites and cocktail cabinets. Highly sought after. The quality of the furniture produced by the Epstein brothers of London’s East End is recognized as among the finest in the British Art Deco style, both in terms of design and production. Their style reflected the avant-garde influences of the Paris, 1925 ‘Art Deco’ exhibition, seen in their use of curvilinear forms and rich veneers. These traits blended, almost unconsciously with a certain grandeur and scale that derived from their family’s Russian background, and found expression in designs that were also in tune with the Modernist ethos emanating from continental Europe. A conservative and singularly British, Art Deco style became the Epstein trademark. There were three versions of this design; this wraparound version, a banded version and a version with no show wood, just fabric. Chair dimensions: H 33 in, W 31 in, D 36 in, SH 17.5 in. Sofa dimensions: H 34 in. x W 67 in. x D 36 in. SH 17.5 in. Refinished and ready to place.

Wear consistent with age and use. Leather is excellent. All springs tight. Some overall checking to veneer. Newly refinished dark birch. NOTE: these are sitting on movers dollies for ease of positioning during photo shoot. Please disregard the four wheeled carts.
