10 Don Ruseau Provincial Caned Walnut Dining Armchairs

About the Item

Set of ten dining armchairs by legendary carver Don Ruseau Inc., New York City. Provincial Louis XV style with caned backs and seats. Hand carved and all joints pegged, not glued. Fitted with custom seat cushions in brown cut velvet. (Comes with extra yardage from original bolt) Each chair measures: Seat height 17 inches (18 inches with seat cushion) Arm height 26 inches. The companion dining table by Don Ruseau has sold (ref: LU886610213391) These ten chairs along with the table were ordered in 1970 by famed Boston interior decorator George H. Clark Associates on behalf of a prominent family. The original invoice from November 1970 shows the pricing: Ten armchairs: $7,750. Dining table with four leaves: $4,750. On Don Ruseau, Inc. from "Daytonian in Manhattan": "Jane Templeton, who ran the shop with Dominic Cavanna, explained to columnist Virginia Lee Warren of The New York Times in August 1964 that master furniture makers taught apprentices in their workshop here." “Of her 20 craftsmen, mostly French and Italian, one is 74 and the majority of the others are in their 50s,” reported the article. It added “Almost all the craftsmen now at work were trained in Europe, often starting as apprentices at the age of 11 or even younger.”
