About the Item

Rare set of 6 armchairs by Roland Rainer, Austria, 1965, model 702. Wood armrests, brown leather seat flat steel and steel tubing. A very nice filigree design. Good to very good restored condition. Measures: W 55 cm, D 52 cm, H 75 cm, SH 46 cm, front armrest height 71 cm. Dr. Roland Rainer helped to shape Austrian architecture for many decades and received numerous state awards for his work. He was also active in the design of green spaces and garden planning in some cities. As a worldly all-rounder, he also devoted himself to furniture designs that became very popular and partly famous, such as his wooden bar chairs (1947), the stackable series chairs of the Vienna Stadthalle (1951) or his tubular steel armchair (1955, Wilkhahn company). Rainer studied architecture at the TH in Vienna from 1928 and finished his dissertation in 1935. He travelled half the world, was in China, France, Holland, Persia, Poland, Italy and Germany for study purposes, and then returned to Vienna after the war in 1949. 1953/54 he had a professorship for housing, urban planning and regional planning at the TH Hannover, in the years 1955 to 1956 a professorship for design and building construction at the TH Graz and from 1956 to 1980 he headed the master school for architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown Vienna. Among his many awards are the Austrian Cross of Honour 1st Class (1962), the Austrian Decoration of Honour for Science and Art (1979) and the Great Golden Decoration of Honour for Science and Art with the Star (2000). From 1958 to 1963 he also worked as a city planner for Vienna. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Roland Rainer died in 2004 at the age of 94 in his hometown
