Campo & Graffi Dining Set Comprising 6 Chairs & Matching Table, 1958, published

US$9,800per set

Exquisite and super rare 1958 dining set by Franco Campo and Carlo Graffi for their own Atelier 'Home' based in Turin Italy comprising a set of six sculptural form teak plywood dining chairs complete with the original and matching mahogany veneered top dining table as illustrated in the November 1958 issue of the famous Italian design journal 'Domus' , PLEASE SEE IMAGE 2. If absolutely necessary we would consider selling the six chairs and table separately but ideally we would like to keep such a rare dining set together. PLEASE NOTE One additional chair is also available to make a set of seven chairs should that be required. Campo & Graffi studied under and collaborated with Carlo Mollino on several projects as well as designing some of the most exquisite italian mid century furniture in their own right. Please refer to the Biography section below for more historical information on the designers and please also refer to the last collage image that I have put together which illustrates more of their stunning designs where you can clearly see the influence of Carlo Mollino on their work. The six teak plywood dining chairs are exquisite and have an extremely elegant sculptural plywood form with a super slim delicate profile. Pure minimalist sculptural beauty. All the chairs are signed with original manufacturer's marks. Two of the chairs have their original worn manufacturer's decals to the underside of the Teak plywood seats and the other two have the impressed 'Campo Graffi' heat mark to the underside of seats. Please refer to images number 12 and 14. The plywood seat shells were all artisan moulded and hence there are slight discrepancies in the overall height due to the chairs coming from two different production batches. This is common with artisan crafted chairs from this period and when viewed as a set these minor discrepencies are really not noticeable. If you place the two slightly taller chairs at the head and tail of the table thern you would definitely not notice this small difference. Please refer to IMAGE number 3. where you can see the six chairs in a row.. We know that the 'home' atelier where these chairs were originally fabricated burnt to the ground in 1964 , production started in 1958 and we have not found any adverts for this dining chair model post 1961 so the production run was short. PLEASE NOTE these are extremely delicate chairs by design , the plywood seats need to be treated with the utmost care to maintain their integrity, these are not chairs where you can knock them around or rock back and forth on them, they are really for adults who will treat them with the utmost respect and lightness oif touch as the plywood seats being extremely fine in profile could easily be damaged unless used with some care and respect. The plywood seats are connected to the enameled steel legs via an elegant single central circular mounting point so all the seat stress is concentrated into this one central point of the plywood seat, another reason why these chairs are extremely delicate and therefore even harder to find today. CONDITION : The chairs and table are visually in good condition but due to the inherent delicacy of the thin profile plywood seats I am going to give the chairs a FAIR rating so clients know they really need to handle and use the plywood seats with care and respect to maintain their structural integrity. The set is priced accordingly. The matching dining table is in nice condition and is far more sturdy in its overall construction which contrasts and emphasises beautifully the lightness of the chairs, the Mahogany veneer wood table top features an elegant elliptical tapered form supported on a sturdy cast enameled steel frame featuring adjustable height feet to accomodate uneven floor surfaces. The tapered elliptical form of the table top allows for each seated person to be in full view of the others , an elegant design feature I have also seen on Ico Parisi conference tables. The Dimensions listed in the main Dimensions section of the listing are for each dining chaiir. DIMENSIONS OF THE DINING TABLE : 160 cm long x 80.5cm wide in the center of the table tapering down to 62cm wide at each end x 78 cm high A complete matching Campo & Graffi dining set such as this is almost impossible to find today and we are proud to be able to offer it to our clients. A rare opportunity to acquire a beautiful design classic with great investment potential especially given the provenance of the two designers. IMPORTANT PLEASE ASK FOR CONDITION REPORT BEFORE PURCHASING --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LITERATURE : 'DOMUS' November 1958, 'Domus Rassegna' feature article on Campo & Graffi's new products, unpaginated, please see image 2. 'RIVISTA DELL ARREDAMENTO', issue June 1959 , black and white full page advert on Campo & Graffi products , I have highlighted the chairs and table with a red arrow. 'RIVISTA DELL ARREDAMENTO' 1961, full page advert on Campo & Graffi products on a red background illustrating an exploded view of the dining chair and its construction details. 'IL MOBILE ITALIANO DEGLI ANNI '40 e '50' ,Guttry & De Maino, pages 128-129, Laterza, 1992 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CAMPO & GRAFFI BIOGRAPHY : Franco Campo and Carlo Graffi studied at the polytechnic of Milano under the stewardship of maestro Carlo Mollino. Upon graduating in 1950 they developed a strong rapport with Mollino and became close friends, collaborating closely with Mollino on many of his architectural , interior design and furniture projects in addition to working alongside Mollino on his designs for several pavillions for design fairs and exhibition spaces. Franco Campo in particular quickly became Mollino's primary assistant at Turin polytechnic. When Campo & Graffi decided to branch out on their own Mollino's influence was clear to all, often resulting in beautiful organic biomorphic forms that Mollino himself would have been proud of, they even used Mollino's preferred carpenter 'Apelli,Varesio & C ' to excecute their beautiful designs. Please see collage photo , IMAGE 10, which illustrates a few of these beautiful organic form designs. During this early period they were mainly designing furniture and interiors for exclusive very high end furniture companies and exclusive private clients . In 1956 the pair decided that they wanted the general public to also have access to good quality design with a high aesthetic quality and decided to open their own factory and brand , 'Home' , with this intention. Their designs for 'Home' more often than not were finished in teak wood with restrained black stove enameled structures reflecting their great admiration for the aesthetic purity of Scandinavian industrial design which also matched their intentions. 'Home' opened three prestigious stores in Italy, Turin,Genoa and Rome, where they also sold other high quality italian design by Arflex,Tecno and Poggi alongside their own designs. Sadly their utopian vision of quality design with a high aesthetic value, available for all, came to an abrupt end in 1964 when the 'Home' Factory burnt down bringing to an end the collaboration of these two enigmatic designers. Carlo Graffi returned to work alongside Mollino while Franco Campo continued on producing his own designs, several of which today are regarded as design classics of the highest order.
