Original Bruno Mathsson ‘Pernilla’ Chaise Longue in Beech, Leather and Shearling

Bruno Mathsson for Karl Mathsson, chaise longue ‘Pernilla’, sheepskin, leather, beech, fabric, brass, Sweden, design 1944 The ‘Pernilla’ chaise longue is one of the most vibrant designs by Swedish designer Bruno Mathsson. The beautifully curved frame is upholstered with soft sheepskin that invites the user to relax. On both armrests leather cushions and a soft head cushion provide extra comfort. A practical reading board can be adjusted to a preferred height and be turned outwards when not in use. The two large wheels are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. Bruno Mathsson’s own ‘Pernilla’ chaise longue featured braided leather seating and was mostly used by him to take phone calls. The design for the ‘Pernilla’ originated in 1933 when Mathsson was creating the lounge chair ‘number 1’. He undertook constant adjustments to his design and finalized it in the ‘Pernilla’ chaise longue in 1944. Please note that this chaise longue shows admirable patina as well as signs of wear and use. Restoration is possible which our in-house restoration and upholstery atelier can take care of for you. Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) was born in Sweden as the son of a cabinetmaker. His interest in architecture and furniture design developed early in his life. From his first designs on Mathsson was eager to use new, innovative techniques and soon became specialist in bending of laminated wood. In 1937 he was represented at Expo Paris where he won the Grand Prix for his bed called ‘Paris’. This Expo helped Mathsson to get known worldwide. The manager of the MoMA design department got interested in his designs and started to collect and exhibit his pieces. Mathsson’s oeuvre focusses on the ‘mechanisms of sitting’. His chair designs feature curved lines that follow the human body and focus on comfort. Collaborations per example with Piet Hein, together they developed the ‘Superellipse’ table, were successful. Nowadays Mathsson’s oeuvre is known for a striking combination of functionality and well-balanced design. His legacy takes an important part in Scandinavian Modern design.

About the Designer

Bruno Mathsson

As the descendant of four generations of Swedish master cabinetmakers, Bruno Mathsson was born to design furniture. Mathsson was known as a methodical perfectionist who made usefulness the fundamental attribute of his works, yet he was also a ceaseless experimenter, who constantly searched for improvements in form, materials and methods of making. Like the Finnish designer Alvar Aalto, Mathsson was one of the first Scandinavians to embrace undulating, biomorphic forms in furniture. His early pieces such as the Eva and Pernilla series of chairs incorporate dramatically flowing bent beechwood frames, making them some of the most instantly recognizable works of 20th-century design. Mathsson was also a pioneer of ergonomics — he is said to have based the contours of his chairs on the impression his body made when he sat in a snow bank — and used supple, accommodating woven webbing for seats. His concern for practicality is shown by pieces such as the Maria table. An elegant design with gate legs and hinged leaves, the table measures more than nine feet long when fully extended, but folds down to just nine inches in thickness. From the mid-1940s through the 1950s, Mathsson focused on architecture, designing and building houses with insulated, triple-glazed window walls and heated floors — construction that flew in the face of traditional wood-clad Swedish residential design, and consequently met with some skepticism. He returned to furniture in the 1960s, employing an entirely new suite of materials: Stainless-steel framing and mesh seats feature in pieces like the Jetson chair; with the mathematician Piet Hein, Mathsson designed the Super-Elliptical table, which has a laminate top and four-part tubular steel legs that sprout like flower stems from a single base. Bruno Mathsson’s stylistic flexibility as a designer, as you will see from the works on 1stDibs, make him a creator whose pieces meet all tastes and needs.
