Iconic Gerrit Rietveld for Groenekan ‘Zig Zag’ Chair in Elm

US$16,700per item

Gerrit Rietveld for Groenekan, ‘Zig Zag’ chair, elm, The Netherlands, design 1932/1933, manufactured between 1935-1973 Not a lot of chairs reach such fame like the ‘Zig Zag’ which is most likely one of the greatest icons ever designed by Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964). Designed in 1932/33, Rietveld created many different and also custom-made versions. In this case, the chair was manufactured by Gerard A. van de Groenekan between 1935-1973. It’s characteristic z-shape resulted in Rietveld’s idea to minimize the volume of the chair. Originally, he intended to design a chair that consists of one piece of folded material only. Although the ‘Zig Zag’ appears to consist of one piece, it in fact is built of four separate plans screwed together. To maximize strength, the angles are filled with triangular wedges. Typical for the 1930s and Rietveld’s designs, he focused on the constructively necessary parts and left decoration out. The chair impresses through his form. The elements are all essential to the construction: the backrest, seat, leg and base. In Rietveld's own words: "a little partition in space that leaves the space untouched. It is not a chair, but a structural joke. I always called it little zig-zag." Yet despite Rietveld's own joke on the matter, the ‘Zig Zag’ chair is considered to be the purest example of the synthesis between form, function and construction in Rietveld’s oeuvre. It is part of many museum design collections all over the world. Please note that we have more chairs in our collection.
