Rare Midcentury Copacabana Chair by Mathieu Matégot, 1955

About the Item

A rare collectible vintage lounge Copacabana chair by iconic French designer Mathieu Matégot composed of curved tubular steel legs and structure. This particular edition is distinguishable through the very rare design of the front feet. The seat and backrest have been handcrafted using high-quality Italian leather and the frame has been left untouched in order to preserve the item's vintage historic beauty. Nevertheless, it is possible to re-lacquer the frame as an additional request. France, circa 1950s. About Mathieu Matégot (1910-2001) Born and educated in Budapest, furniture and tapestry designer Mathieu Matégot moved to France in the early 1930s, where he worked as a window dresser and women’s clothing designer. He learned metalworking techniques as a prisoner of war in the 1940s, and upon his release began designing furniture, pioneering many of what we now identify as midcentury design tropes, like metal-mounted rattan, steel tubing, and perforated sheet metal. By the 1970s, Matégot returned to producing tapestries, many of which evoke Abstract Expressionist paintings. ---------- We are an exhibition space and an online destination established by the passionate art director behind Jonathan Amar Studio.  Our gallery presents a harmonious mix of iconic and engaging 20th-century pieces and bespoke contemporary lighting. With a strong focus on Italian mid-century designs, his success strives from sourcing designs with striking shapes, creative techniques, and interesting materials that cross the concept of time in the same way a Spirit does.
All our pieces are expertly restored at our atelier and we only offer items that will last another lifetime. Our 350 square meter workspace includes a luminous gallery, a restoration atelier where our expert artisans in metalwork, woodwork, upholstery, and electrics; restore each piece with the mission to honour a balance between restoration and preservation. There may be light age-related wear but no hard damages or structural issues.
