Cocar Chair in Wood, Brazilian Design

About
Unique design piece
The Cocar chair was first presented at MADE – Mercado, Arte, Design 2019 in São Paulo, Brazil and is part of the Alma-Raiz (Soul and Roots) collection from Yankatu.
The Alma-Raiz collection is born from the deepening plunge of the designer Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros into Brazilian identity.
The pieces made of brown Cabbage wood bring the Tucumã straw (typical palm of The Amazon Forest) stained with roots, leaves and fruits and braided by the artisans of the riverside Community of Urucureá, in Pará.
Yankatu chairs reflect how creative we Brazilians are, and how we are able to perpetuate what pulsates in our land.
In the designer´s words:
“In every project I make I dive deeply into the lives of people who work with me. It´s a dive governed by research, guided by the heart, made with respect, confidence and the pace dictated by time.
In every collection I make there is a meeting of souls and essences. I transform myself and bring about transformations, attitudes that reflect on people, surroundings and beyond.
The palpable part of this work is the pieces (the chairs and the tables and everything else) that intertwine my gaze with that of the lives that share their moments with me.
The other part, immeasurable, is continually developing in a mix of art and freedom with no time to end.
The “SOUL”:
All the pieces produced by Yankatu are unique and accompanied by its soul, a certificate of authenticity in the form of a small book that tells about the inspiration that gave birth to it.
The book leaves some blank pages for those who acquired the piece can continually tell its history. This way it turns into something more, which does not depend on fashion, which does not go by with time. On the contrary, it will move on from a generation to another, from hand to hand, each time with more stories to tell, each time incorporating the lives shared by it.
Important information:
The wood comes from nature and each one is unique, with its veins, knots and tones. Due it is a natural material it suffers with the climate change, so cracks and shifts in color may emerge over time. The wood can also warp sometimes due to a large variation in relative humidity of the air.
The Tucumã straw used in some of the pieces is handmade and natural so it can also suffers from the action of time, lightness and humidity.
These same effects can occur with fabrics and other details incorporated into the piece.
These characteristics are part of the history of the piece not considered defects.
The handcrafted details does not repeat itself, they may be similar but never equal. That´s the imperfect perfection that makes each one of them unique.
The first photo corresponds to the described product above. The other photos may come accompanied by other pieces of the collection.

About The Maker

Yankatu - design with soul
View ProfileMy motivation comes from my soul and flows openly, on my life and in my work. I love what I do and I do it with intensity, I live every moment and I transmit all this emotion.
In each project I immerse myself deeply in the region, in their craft and in the lives of the people who make them, it is a dive governed by research and by my soul, guided by the heart, done with respect and with the rhythm dictated by time.
I get transformed and provoke transformations, and these atitudes reflect in the surroundings and beyond.
I believe that design and art are one of the ways to value and eternalize the ancestral knowledge of Brazilian traditional crafts and the importance of nature around us, and so I use all tools that I have to create a quilt of infinite possibilities, full of feelings.
Through Yankatu I expose not only my work, I bring with me the dreams and works of the artisans and instigate new dreams.
The tangible part of this work are the pieces that intertwine my touch with the lives that share their moments with me. The other part, immeasurable, is in continuous development, in a mixture of art and freedom, with no date to finish. It is a continuous development, in a relationship created around respect and trust.
My desire, to be able to do this as long as I live.
