André Sornay: Important Set of Six Walnut & Leather Dining Chairs, France 1930s

About the Item

André Sornay (1902-2000) A beautiful set of six minimalist, pure-lined dining chairs by André Sornay, with subtly curved and tapered backs and elegant sabre legs. In French walnut upholstered in soft burnt umber leather. The chairs' clean, resolutely modern lines and harmonious geometry are emblematic of Sornay's approach, which revolutionized and democratized French design beginning in the 1920s. Influenced by the Bauhaus and de Stijl movements, which synthesized aesthetics with everyday function, Sornay belonged to the Union des Artistes Modernes, a group of architects and artists designing novel forms, ideally calibrated to modern life. UAM also included Pierre Chareau, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, and Robert Mallet-Stevens, like Sornay avant-garde designers eager to break with tradition, unite beauty and practicality, and make art accessible to all— goals concretized in this early set of pared-down dining chairs. France, 1930s. Signed. Literature: "Signé Sornay," Galerie Alain Marcelpoil, p.261.
