  • Office Cane Chairs by Pierre Jeanneret, PJ-SI-28-A, Chandigarh, 1955
    By Pierre Jeanneret
    Located in Antwerp, BE
Iconic "Office Cane Chairs" created by Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950s for the city of Chandigarh in India, the utopian city designed by his cousin Le Corbusier. Made of solid wood with seat and backrest in braided canework. Tilted backrest and asymmetric flat profiled "compass"-type double side leg assembly, with the legs connected by a crosspiece and supporting the armrests. Slanted, slightly curved backrest, separate from the seat. The seemingly floating back as well as the "compass"-type legs are very typical for this office chair. These specific features make the design even more powerful and interesting. The office chair was part of the furniture from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh. It's a true icon, one of the most famous pieces of all Chandigarh items. Jeanneret’s designs stand out for their essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Another interesting and nowadays relevant fact about these and other Chandigarh chairs is that all pieces were made from the trees which were logged because the city was built, so an early adaptation of ecological thinking. We have four office chairs...

Gerard Van Den Berg; arm chair; Modern; Plain, usually slightly curved, and yet suggestive and unmistakable forms are typical of Gerard van den Berg. In the Seventies, he founded together with his brother the Montis upholstered furniture company. Thanks to his designs the young company soon attained international recognition. It´s success did not stop van den Berg´s leaving Montis in the early Nineties. Since then he has been a freelance designer. His work for leading international furniture companies...

  • Hans J. Wegner Danish 1940s Leather and Oak Model A721 Executive Chair
    By Hans J. Wegner
    Located in Highclere, Newbury
An exceedingly rare Hans J. Wegner Model A721 cognac leather and oak early Danish Mid-century executive chair for Planmøbel, Denmark 1940. Originally designed by Wegner following his work for Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller’s ground breaking Rådhus (Aarhus City Hall) project in 1940, the A721, stands out as one of his earliest known chair designs. Along with a number of other chairs like the B123, the Rådhus chairs were handcrafted by Michael Laursen, I.C.A Nielsen and Planmøbel specifically for the project. Originally made in small numbers all the chairs were of uniform construction with solid oak frames matched to leather upholstery and with thick, solid jointing work that complemented the angular forms. Here we also see for the first time, Wegner’s use of the flared arm rest that were a signature design element for every armchair produced for the Rådhus. These flares were either carved into the wood (as in the Council chamber chairs...
