Unusual American Empire Mahogany Armchair

About the Item

Mid-late 19th century (Second Period) American Empire chair, stripped, tightened and finish restored and polished, ready for your upholsterer's workbench. It is most unusual to find seating of this period and style in this size. Sofas and settees were prevalent but I have never seen another example of the form as a one person arm chair. Nicely carved detail including scrolled acanthus leaf arms including small rosettes at end of armrest scrolls, four lions paw feet on cornucopia legs, dragooned centre seat rail with inlaid brass and griffon or eagles heads. See photos of original upholstery with pair of bolster cushions prior to restoration and fabulous photo of playwright Eugene Ionesco. Stockbridge Massachusetts. 1970s photo by Beverly Pabst seated in similar chair.
