Set of Medallion chairs and armchairs Austrian work First half of the 20th century Carved oak This set of oak wood seats is composed of two chairs and two armchairs with carved medallions on the backrests. Medallions work in pairs. These are two portraits sculpted in profile: a woman and a man, whose Austrian hats give information about their origin. The chair medallions are an exact replica of the chair medallions, but of a smaller size. The files in this set are cut into scrolls. Apart from these medallions and the cutting of the files, the whole is relatively simple, intimate and rustic, perfectly suitable for furnishing a chalet. The stamp of the artist or Manufacture behind this set is visible on the back of the seat of one of the chairs. However, the letters of Gothic form are not sufficiently legible and do not allow to establish a certain origin. Nevertheless, Austria can very easily be identified as the place where the seats were made Due to their treatment, these armchairs belong to one of the branches of the Art Nouveau style. The decorations are rural, mixed with the structure of the seats and the design of the furniture is consistent with the architecture and interior design for which it is intended. The whole is rather raw and imposing: we are far from the scrolls and other delicate scrolls created by the artists of the "vegetal" Art Nouveau . We feel the artist's desire to create a comfortable, rustic and intimate ensemble. The function of this set takes precedence over its decorative character: this set is perfectly suited to a chalet.
