Knoll International Leather 'Brno' Chairs by Mies van der Rohe, 1987, Signed

US$8,800per set

About

This set of four (4) signed (authentic) Knoll International 'Brno' Chairs are in an incredible black leather. These collectible 2nd generation productions by Knoll International have an attractive and lovely patina to the leather and is signed and dated Oct 11 1987 with Knoll International labels. We have other examples in black so if you need a larger set please contact us to discuss. This is an excellent opportunity for the distinguished collector, designer or client who wishes to have a set of signed original and authentic Brno chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - and the incredible craftsmanship that was the original Knoll International. Don't make the mistake of buying a new reproduction Brno chair from Knoll when you can buy the collectors ones - these original examples from Knoll International are far better than new version currently produced. Although at least the Knoll reproductions are authentic licensed production. We highly suggest avoiding altogether buying fakes, including the Gordon International or Brueton production examples, despite what some dealers may try to tell you, they are not authentic and not considered a collectors piece like the original early production Knoll Associates and Knoll International versions like this set. As most collectors are aware, the Brno chair is one of the most highly copied of Mid-Century Modern designs - so why would anyone buy an unmarked Brno chair? Yet much of the inventory you'll find online and in galleries are either unmarked versions (which can often indicate that it is an unlicensed copy) or recent reproductions. Current new Knoll reproductions can cost over $3,000 per chair and have up to a 12 week lead time and these lack the collectibility of early production originals and also lack the beautiful patina that's developed over decades of light aging. And most of the available vintage sets are unsigned, so you don't really know what you are going to get - maybe its Knoll and maybe its not, it's a roll of the dice - don't take the dealers word for it - we see more incorrectly listed Brno chairs than we see correctly listed ones. If you are a collector, designer or client who wishes the best of the best - and to have items that are unmistakingly originals of classic designs... don't settle for new reproductions or unmarked used inventory... consider the long term investment value of this set vs the other options available. And don't just take the dealers word for it - make sure you see the label before you make the purchase. This set of six (6) Brno armchairs feature an elegant Silhouette of slender proportions, comprising of a hefty stainless steel cantilevered frames in very good, bright and clean condition and upholstered with the original thick black leather in good vintage condition with light and attractive patina, this pair is ready to be used immediately in your high-end designer project. This exemplary set of arm chairs could work wonderfully in a dining room or an executive conference or meeting room, or with an executive desk as guest or side chairs in a corporate or creative office - or in a design studio or showroom lobby, even consider for hospitality locations, would be a phenomenal option for a restaurant, cafe, members club, lobby lounge, hotel lobby or cocktail bar. Consider using as dining armchairs, side chairs, cafe or breakfast table chairs, bedside chair, fireside chair, dressing or changing room chair, hallway chair, entryway or mudroom chair, nursing or reading chair, conference room chairs, office or desk chair, guest chairs, lobby chairs, lounge chairs or occasional chairs ideal in virtually any setting. The simple understated Classic design of this chair allows you to pair it with most styles of decor, from Mid-Century Modern to Contemporary to Traditional. Designers - pitch this to your client before your competition does, so your client gets an authentic, signed early production example of Fine Classic design. More about The Brno Chair An icon of 20th century design, the Brno chair was designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1930 for his renowned Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic. A singular Flat Bar Brno chair was included in the master bedroom of the house and as a result was not put into production. Unlike the Tubular Brno chairs of which there were 24 examples of. In 1958 Phillip Johnson put in a request to Knoll for the Flat Bar Brno chair as he intended on using the design for furbishing the Four Seasons restaurant. After some revisions Knoll reintroduced the chair and are still being made to this day. About the Designer

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Architect, furniture designer and educator, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a central figure in the advancement and promotion of modernist design and architectural theory and practice. Like Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, he was a hugely influential presence in the field, who shaped the course of 20th-century architecture both through his buildings and his teaching of rationalist design principles. Born in the medieval German city of Aachen, Mies found an interest in architecture as a boy while working for his father, a master stonemason. He had no formal education as an architect, but learned his skills as an apprentice to the designer Bruno Paul, and as a staffer in the office the proto-modernist architect and designer Peter Behrens. Following World War I, Mies rose to prominence in his field amid the liberal atmosphere of the Weimar Republic. His reputation was secured by his work on the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona (commonly referred to as the Barcelona Pavilion) — which Mies codesigned with Lilly Reich, his creative and romantic partner — a radically simple, poetic, open-plan building pared down to its architectural essentials. Mies would go on to direct the Bauhaus from 1930 until 1933, when Nazi-government interference forced the closure of the progressive art and design school. Later that decade, he made his way to Chicago, where he remained for the rest of his career as a practicing architect and a dean of the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mies’s famed dictum “less is more” grew from his belief that architecture both guides and expresses the spirit of the times, and he envisioned the 20th century as open-minded, logical, transparent and liberated by technology. His best-known buildings — residences such as the Villa Tugendhat in Czechoslovakia and the Farnsworth House in rural Illinois; skyscrapers like the 860–880 Lake Shore Drive apartment towers in Chicago and the Seagram Building in New York — reflect that philosophy. As do the most famous furniture designs authored by him or codesigned with Reich. Pieces designed by Mies and Reich such as the Barcelona chair, stools and daybed, or the cantilevered Brno chairs, deliver a maximum of comfort and support from a minimum of materials: their “lavishness” derives from the precision with which they are engineered and constructed. For the collector, the allure of Mies’s furniture is at once practical and idealistic. Useful and functional, his works embody the highest aspirations of modernism.
