Geraldo de Barros Lounge Chair in Iron with Yellow Upholstery

US$18,400

About

Geraldo de Barros for Unilabor, armchair, fabric, iron, wood, Brazil, 1955 This lounge chair is by designed by the Brazilian modernist designer Geraldo de Barros. The chair features the profound used materials by Unilabor, an iron frame in combination with wood for the armrests. The geometric iron frame forms the base of this chair and supports the bulky seat in yellow upholstery. This design is a wonderful example of de Barros' designs that bear constructive references related to Concrete Art. Geraldo de Barros (1923-1998) was a painter, photographer, graphic and product designer. He was experimenting with new forms and aesthetics during the 1940s. In 1952 he founded the Ruptura Group where excessive formalism was the core of their ideals. Barros believed that it was his task to educate the taste of the masses. In 1954 Geraldo de Barros, together with a Dominican Priest, found the Unilabor Community. He designs and project furniture based on his constructive references related to Concrete Art. From 1954-1961 Unilabor was one of the Stand marks in furniture design in São Paulo. Its social characteristic is well renowned. In his company Hobjeto Barros combined his two ideals by standardizing the production processes of home and office furniture. His furniture introduced innovative techniques such as the injection of rigid structured polyurethane and cut and lacquered chipboard.
