Dark Purple Leather 'Brno' Armchairs by Mies van der Rohe for Knoll, Signed

About

This set of six (6) signed (authentic) early production Knoll 'Brno' Chairs are in an incredible deep purple leather that looks black in some lighting and charcoal grey in other lighting but upon close examination is actually a very deep and dark purple. So beautiful especially with the moderate leather patina - the color and patina will mesmerize you every day you see them and provide a different look throughout the day as the lighting changes in the room. These collectible 3rd generation productions are by Knoll North America, Inc have an attractive and lovely patina to the leather and is signed and dated January 31, 1994 with Knoll North America labels. This period was directly after Knoll International and employed the same manufacturing facilities and processes as the original design. Years later Knoll Studio changed the design slightly and current new productions are not as collected as the earlier ones like this set. This is an excellent opportunity for the distinguished collector, designer or client who wishes to have a set of signed original and authentic Brno chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - and the incredible craftsmanship that was the original Knoll International. Don't make the mistake of buying a new reproduction Brno chair from Knoll when you can buy the collectors ones - these original examples are far better than new version currently produced. Although at least the Knoll reproductions are authentic licensed production. We highly suggest avoiding altogether buying fakes, including the Gordon International or Brueton production examples, despite what some dealers may try to tell you, they are not authentic and not considered a collectors piece like the original early production versions like this set. As most collectors are aware, the Brno chair is one of the most highly copied of Mid-Century Modern designs - so why would anyone buy an unmarked Brno chair? Yet much of the inventory you'll find online and in galleries are either unmarked versions (which can often indicate that it is an unlicensed copy) or recent reproductions. Current new Knoll reproductions can cost over $3,000 per chair and have up to a 12 week lead time and these lack the collectibility of early production originals and also lack the beautiful patina that's developed over decades of light aging. And most of the available vintage sets are unsigned, so you don't really know what you are going to get - maybe its Knoll and maybe its not, it's a roll of the dice - don't take the dealers word for it - we see more incorrectly listed Brno chairs than we see correctly listed ones. If you are a collector, designer or client who wishes the best of the best - and to have items that are unmistakingly originals of Classic designs... don't settle for new reproductions or unmarked used inventory... consider the long term investment value of this set vs the other options available. And don't just take the dealers word for it - make sure you see the label before you make the purchase. This set of six (6) Brno armchairs feature an elegant Silhouette of slender proportions, comprising of a hefty stainless steel cantilevered frames in very good, bright and clean condition and upholstered with the original exotic thick leather in good vintage condition with light to moderate and attractive patina, ready to be used immediately in your high-end designer project. This exemplary set of arm chairs could work wonderfully in a dining room or an executive conference or meeting room, or with an executive desk as guest or side chairs in a corporate or creative office - or in a design studio or showroom lobby, even consider for hospitality locations, would be a phenomenal option for a restaurant, cafe, members club, lobby lounge, hotel lobby or cocktail bar. Consider using as dining armchairs, side chairs, cafe or breakfast table chairs, bedside chair, fireside chair, dressing or changing room chair, hallway chair, entryway or mudroom chair, nursing or reading chair, conference room chairs, office or desk chair, guest chairs, lobby chairs, lounge chairs or occasional chairs ideal in virtually any setting. The simple understated Classic design of this chair allows you to pair it with most styles of decor, from Mid-Century Modern to Contemporary to Traditional. Designers - pitch this to your client before your competition does, so your client gets an authentic, signed early production example of Fine Classic design. *more About The Brno Chair* An icon of 20th century design, the Brno chair was designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1930 for his renowned Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic. A singular Flat Bar Brno chair was included in the master bedroom of the house and as a result was not put into production. Unlike the Tubular Brno chairs of which there were 24 examples of. In 1958 Phillip Johnson put in a request to Knoll for the Flat Bar Brno chair as he intended on using the design for furbishing the Four Seasons restaurant. After some revisions Knoll reintroduced the chair and are still being made to this day. Condition Good condition with attractive moderate patina to leather. About Knoll (Manufacturer)

As a company that produced many of the most famous and iconic furniture designs of the 20th century, Knoll was a chief influence in the rise of modern design in the United States. Led by Florence Knoll, the firm would draw stellar talents such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen into its compass. Their work would help change the face of the American home and office.

The company was formed in 1938 by the German immigrant Hans Knoll. He first worked with his fellow ex-pat, the Danish designer Jens Risom, who created furniture with flowing lines made of wood. While Risom served in World War II, in 1943 Knoll met his future wife, Florence Schust. She had studied and worked with eminent emigré leaders of the Bauhaus, including Mies, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. She won Knoll over with Bauhaus notions of industrial arts, and an aesthetic that featured flat and tubular metal frames and angular forms. When Hans died in a car crash in 1955, Florence Knoll was appointed head of the company. It was as much through her holistic approach to design—a core division of the firm was dedicated to planning office systems—as Knoll furnishings themselves that she brought about the sleek and efficient transformation of the American workplace.

Today, classic Knoll furnishings remain staples of modern design collections and decors. A history of modern design is written in pieces such as Mies’ elegant Barcelona Chair, Saarinen’s pedestal Tulip chair, Breuer’s tubular steel Wassily chair and the grid-patterned Diamond chair by Harry Bertoia. As you can see from the items on the following pages, these designs and others have become timeless emblems of the progressive spirit and sleek sophistication of the best of Modernism.
