Vintage Spanish Cuenca Rug

About the Item

A vintage Spanish Cuenca carpet from the mid-20th century. Spanish rugs in general are well-known for their decorations and geometric designs. Compared to earlier Spanish rugs created in workshops such as Letur and Alcaraz which use a single Spanish knot and clearer dyes, rugs from Cuenca use a coarse style stout double loop Turkish knot with softer dyes. In this case, soft olive-green and blueish-grey hues are used to create Holbein octagons and Arabesque patterns resting atop a goldenrod field. Unlike the Hispano-Moresque carpets of Spain that strictly use Islamic oriental designs, this rug in particular, uses a "Mudejar" inspired representation which combines both Islamic and Christian design motifs.
