Turn-of-the-Century Art Nouveau Carpet

About the Item

At the end of the 19th century markets were flooded with a glut of mass produced decorative arts products designed to replicate the traditional historical styles of baroque and rococo. This clutter of ornament created a mess of the interior and thus resulted in a revolution of good taste and craftsmanship, often referred to as the Art Nouveau. A new style was born, made using pure forms derived from nature and produced by artists with the utmost of quality and integrity. This carpet was woven on Spanish looms with a French Savonnerie construction at the very beginning of the 20th century, during the Art Nouveau period. The design of flat two dimensional flowers is purposeful and nonrepresentational, rational and not intended to look real. The art of decoration for decoration sake. Beauty, originality and a delightful reminder of the birth of a new artistic style, this carpet is a treasure in many forms.
