Antique Sharkoy Kilim Rug

About the Item

Antique Sharkoy Kilim rug. A finely woven antique kilim rug from the border region between present day Serbia and Bulgaria, centered around the town of Pirot (called Sharkoy by Turks). Once part of the Ottoman Empire, this area has a centuries-old tradition of producing very finely woven large kilim rugs that were favored as summer carpets in the homes of wealthy local patrons and the stately mansions of Istanbul, the empire's capital. Highly stylized flowers cover the red field of this rug, surrounded by light multicolored borders. A great example of this increasingly hard to find type of rug with brilliant natural dyes.
