Antique Kurdish Kilim Runner in Brown With Geometric Patterns, From Rug & Kilim
About the Item
Handwoven in wool circa 1920-1930, this 4×9 antique Caucasian Kilim runner rug is believed to be of Kurdish provenance.
On the Design:
A rich chocolate brown underscores beige, aegean blue and raspberry red tones among the palette of traditional colors within. Admirers of the craft and keen eyes may particularly appreciate the “Ibrik” motifs, aka the ewers, or water pitchers. These symbols are more uncommon among tribal flatweaves curated today, and would often symbolize purity, rejuvenation, and even pregnancy. The rug’s most prominent symbol is the eight-pointed star, which repeats in six medallions in the center field. Connoisseurs may further admire the choice of color variations here and in the piece in general, where the weaver uses a more humble palette to lend a more playful sense of movement to such traditional symmetry.
This variety of subtle, rare features is matched only by its execution, and the sense of personal craft that lends Kilims so much of their old-world charm. It’s a collectible piece of history and folk art as much as a comfortable, livable choice of versatile size.
Condition:
This antique Caucasian Kurdish Kilim further enjoys great condition for its age and origin.
