77562, 1880s distressed antique Chinese Peking rug with Classic Victorian style. This hand knotted wool distressed antique Chinese Peking rug features a rounded open center medallion and four corner medallions floating on an abrashed cream field. This Classic layout is commonly referred to as a “four-and-one medallion” design. In Mandarin, it is sometimes called “Sicai Yitang,” meaning “four courses and one soup,” referring to how meals are often set at the table in Chinese homes. In this particular piece, the center medallion is comprised of an outer ring of peonies and an inner ring of bats circling a center rosette. Peonies are one of the most treasured symbols throughout Chinese art and design, the flower is seen to represent unparalleled beauty and honor. Bats, primarily seen on rugs intended for the domestic Chinese market, are thought to augur good fortune, happiness, and prosperity. The four corner medallions also feature peonies and a fretwork design enclosing a center rosette. The main border features a variety of botanical motifs common in Chinese iconography: peonies, plum flowers, chrysanthemums, bamboo, and wisteria. The inner border features closed blossoms and conch shells, a Buddhist symbol of good luck. The color palette restrained to shades of blues and creams is elegant and tasteful.
