1950s Vintage Midcentury Khotan Samarkand Rug Medallion Pattern by Rug & Kilim

About the Item

Hand knotted in wool originating from Turkey circa 1950-1960, this vintage rug connotes one of the most collectible mid-century Khotan Samarkand rug designs we’ve seen in our collection so far, emphasising the meandering borders enfolding the notably unique medallion-style field pattern in similar earth tones against a gold background. Connoisseurs will note the use of the rich crimson red as an accent to the more prevalent beige-brown and pink hues, an additionally uncommon feature in this particular Classic rug family likely meant to further emphasize these unique symbols and the regal colorway background they enjoy. A welcome addition to the Antique & Vintage rug collection from Rug & Kilim. About the collection: Antique rugs have been in Josh’s resume since he began in the industry almost 40 years ago when he was already recognized for one of the largest oriental rug collections in the United States. Each piece in the internationally recognized volume was hand picked for rarity, and of course aesthetic and beauty, now complementing one of the widest varieties of Persian rug and Turkish rug collections with the utmost attention to individuality and care. Because of Josh’s position in the wholesale rug industry he’s been responsible for promoting a number of collections throughout history, from breathtaking signature Tabriz, Sultanabad, Kerman Lavar, Agra, and Oushak classics to the more unsung jewels of the luxury industry. Vintage has also been synonymous with who we are since our beginning, particularly for our unparalleled Kilim collection, but with the rise of midcentury collection the term vintage carpet has become very popular—especially exciting because often times many of the vintage carpets have also been treated, washed, dyed over, sheared, and modified—and has created a very successful category. We’re especially very proud of our vintage Kilims and Turkish rugs curated for our expansive collection of both area rugs and runners alike. Rug & Kilim maintains our own facilities for cleaning and restoration exclusively for carpets we’ve sold to ensure their lasting beauty and care long after a piece leaves our collection.

Vintage Khotan (Samarkand) rug Size: 4'4" × 6'4" (132 × 193 cm) The antique rugs of the oasis towns of East Turkestan are incomparable. These exotic oriental carpets from Kashgar, Yarkand and Khotan in the Chinese occupied Autonomous Region of Sikiang are collectively known as Samarkands. Typically, they are in a long and relatively narrow format with simplistic spacious designs rendered in a glossy wool, occasionally embellished with richly brocaded silk and metal-thread. The distinctive and prevailing colorations of lacquer reds, Chinese yellows, heavily influenced by the neighboring countries of China and Turkey, have been produced in this region since at least the seventeenth century. For thousands of years these lands of arid steppes, deserts and brutal mountain ranges were traversed by caravans of merchants and traders from China to Western Europe along the Silk Route. These unusual antique Samarkand carpets of Central Asia display...
