Victor Cicansky was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and is a graduate of the Education Department of the University of Saskatchewan (1964). He then went on to the University of Regina where he received a Bachelor of Arts (1965) and then attained a Master of Fine Arts in 1974 from the University of California at Davis. He is known for his whimsical, witty and finely made work in bronze and ceramic. Cicansky grew up in the Regina Community of Garlic Flats, a region known for its abundant production of vegetables. Grounded in the real gardens of his Community, his work leaps from reality into the fertile garden of his imagination, where his ideas are given free reign. He has executed many large-scale public art commissions, including The Garden of the Mind at the College of Agriculture Building in Saskatoon. Smaller works include the Creation Series, which makes a visual play on the image of the hand of God bringing Adam to life (as painted by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel), where instead Cicansky uses the work-worn hand of a farmer to bring potatoes, tomatoes and other vegetables to life.
