Rare 1950s Dunhill Aquarium Half-Giant Lighter, Silver Plated, Made in England

About the Item

A rare 1950s Half-Giant Dunhill aquarium table lighter (made in England) with silver plated metal work Each of these lighters are very rare and unique as they were hand carved and painted and no one look exactly similar. Ben Shillingford (1904-2000) commenced to work for Dunhill in the late 1940s as a Master Engraver. The “Aquarium” Collection was launched in 1949 and it ceased at the end of the 1950s following Ben Shillingford’s retirement, simply because his mastery could never be equaled. No two aquarium lighters are the same, each and every piece was uniquely handmade, carved, painted and assembled by Ben Shillingford and his team. The vast majority depict fish and various aquatic scenes, however, other subjects such as ships, birds and hunting scenes were produced in very small numbers. “Aquarium” lighters were made in four different sizes namely the “Giant”, the “Half-Giant”, the “Standard” and the “Service” with three kinds of metal finishes available: gold-plated, silver plated and chrome-plated. This one has blue green background colors with paintings of water plants and rocks. It depict a single Siamese fighting fish on the front panel and two angelfish on the back panel. The side panels are green and black. The silver-plated metal work is in good condition, the paint looks all in good condition to my eyes. The lighter is in working order, to lit them you will have to purchase Dunhill lighter fluid, and fill them, as for shipping regulations the lighters have to be emptied. Dimensions: Height 7.5cm, width 10cm, depth 5cm A good looking and well-made piece, the condition is good for the period, structurally free from any damage Condition: Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description.

  • Alfred Dunhill 1949 Standard Aquarium Lift Arm Petrol Lighter In Perspex Lucite
    By Alfred Dunhill
    Located in Miami, FL
Standard Aquarium desk lighter designed by Dunhill. Very rare standard size Aquarium desk petrol lighter, designed by Dunhill back in the 1949. This mechanical lift arm lighter has been designed in England after the world war II. Has been individually crafted as a one of a kind piece by recycling the perspex lucite from the destroyed war airplanes. Composed by four carved pieces and polished steel parts. This example is virtually in mint condition and barely used, showing absolutely no traces of any wear. Weight: 460 Grams, (168.34 Dwt). Measures: 101 mm by 78 mm by 51 mm ( 3.98 x 3.11 x 2.0 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark and signed, "DUNHILL LIGHTER MADE ENGLAND". Alfred Dunhill inherited his father’s London saddlery in 1893. Following the increase in motor car ownership, Alfred developed the business to include motoring accessories, which he called ‘Dunhill’s Motorities’. This included goggles, timepieces, picnic sets, and leather coats, and it wasn’t long before the brand became associated with men’s general motoring attire. They opened two shops in Mayfair and had a catalogue of over 1300 items. Between the 1904 and 1905, Dunhill introduced their ‘Windshield Pipe’, to help drivers combat the effect of wind and travel on their ability to smoke. This marked both the end of the ‘motorities’ focus and their entry into the world of smoking ephemera, and they shortly opened their first tobacconist in 1907 on Duke Street. The proximity to several esteemed Private Members Clubs around the Mayfair, St James’ area ensured that the venture was a success. (From Nicholas Wells With Thanks). Literature: Blei-Bottoni Ref-418 Pp-220-225 for similar examples of the technique Illustrated. Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation green pouch...
