About
1988 open golf championship print by Arthur Weaver.
'Ballesteros triumphs at the 18th' by Arthur Weaver. A fine print of the winning moment depicting Seve Ballesteros at the 1988 Open Championship, Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club. Seve Ballesteros shot a final round of 65 to capture his third Open Championship and fifth major title. The print is a limited edition, this is No. 337 of 750. Published 1988, signed in pencil by the artist with remarque of Seve holding the 'Claret Jug'.
The 1988 Open Championship was the 117th Open Championship, held at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St Annes, England. For the first time in its 128-year history The Open finished on a Monday after heavy rain on Saturday caused flooding to several greens and the third round was scratched after play was started. The third round was played on Sunday and the fourth on Monday and Seve won for the second time at Royal Lytham & St Annes, the third time in all, but only after a thrilling final-round of 65 to beat Nick Price by two strokes.
Price had led by two from the Spaniard and defending Champion Nick Faldo, with all three playing in the same group. All of them birdied the sixth but when the other two eagled the seventh and Faldo only parred, the Englishman drifted out of contention, finishing with a 71 in third place, six behind the winner. At the 15th hole all was tied between Price and Ballesteros. Then at the 16th Ballesteros hit a great 9-iron to within three inches of the hole to go ahead by one. The 18th and Price was on the green in two, Seve hit a wondrous chip to six inches. Price three-putted for a 69 and second place. Seve said 'So far, it is the best round of my life', 'Nick Price showed he was a Champion, too. I was just a little bit luckier. It is a pity there can only be one Champion.'.
