Stunning Mercury Silver Color Antique Metal Corpus of Christ Behind a Glass Dome

About the Item

19th century 'Corpus Christi' in its original, mouth blown glass and solid oak frame. For a piece that was all handcrafted in the late 19th century, this unique work of religious art is in museum quality condition. Especially for the large and stunning glass dome to have survived perfectly shows that former custodians have taken great care. The combination of the solid oak frame, the high glass dome and the mercury colored corpus against the perfectly draped velvet background is truly beautiful to look at. This work of religious art from the late 1800s is all original and from our photos of the back of the frame you can see that it was never opened. Because we cannot touch the corpus, we cannot be sure, but we believe it to be cast bronze. How the mercury color (best shown in image 10) was applied we don't know, but it makes this sculpture of Christ suffering extra dramatic and this is intensified even more because of how it stands out against the dark velvet background. Both at home or in your church or monastery this handcrafted antique work of religious art will never fail to impress. With perfect packing and worldwide delivery from our store to your door (in just 4 days) included in our price, this unique antique truly is great value for money. Maximum height x width x depth: 23 x 18.1 x 3.15 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for artistic and meaningful and for craftsmanship of years gone by. • Baroque Style Hand Carved Wooden Crucifix with Stunning Bronze Corpus of Christ
    Located in Lisse, NL
Crucifix from the mid-1800s with a carved shroud or veil depicting Christ in the base. This unique and remarkable antique crucifix can both be used as a table and as a wall crucifix. Over the decades we have sold a number of unique and very well crafted crucifixes, but never one in the Baroque style with this combination of materials and techniques. The overall design and size is what stands out first, but the details and the materials are what make this antique work of religious art extraordinary. With four angels (or putti) watching over a sculpture of the Veil of Veronica, the relatively large base of this unique crucifix is a work of religious art in its own right. It is almost as if the cross is growing from this beautiful base and the cross itself too comes with a number of superbly hand carved details. To us, the most remarkable are the three stunning Baroque shells. With their symbolic meaning of birth and resurrection it is obvious why the artist / sculptor so tastefully incorporated them here. Apart from a minor 'lean' to the left, the cross itself too is in excellent condition. If one were to speak of a trinity in this crucifix then the unique base and cross are completed with an equally striking, solid bronze corpus of Christ...

This bronze sculpture of Christ clearly depicts Jesus just shortly after the suffering has ended and His body could no longer hold on to life. People think of different things when looking at Christ who died on the cross, but no matter what you think of most, this antique crucifix...
