About the Item

Another stunning, hand painted, oil on canvas, work of religious art. This antique oil painting was first hand painted on canvas and later glued to a zinc backplate which is one way of keeping the painting in the best possible condition over a longer period of time. In this polychrome painted, antique 10th station the artist clearly shows us the most famous scenes that take place in this historical event. Christ is stripped of His garments which in society at that time reduced your 'status' to zero. In another scene a young man is mixing the wine with gall for Jesus to drink and in the background soldiers are already gambling to decide who gets which parts of His garments. The quality of the workmanship is excellent, but that does not make it easier to watch the cruelty displayed in this 10th station. It too shows us, in a painful manner, what ego and ignorance can lead to. The quality of this historically significant scene is remarkable and that makes this tenth station also an ode to the workmanship of its creator(s). The colors are still as bright as the day this piece was made and together with the gilding in the halo of Christ they give this piece an extra special, evangelic and holy aura. The artist has truly captured the drama of what Jesus had to go through in His final moments on this earth. This striking painting is in its beautifully hand carved, original Gothic Revival oak frame and this frame is a work of art in its own right. You can see the quality of the carving in the perfect symmetry of the Gothic 'fleur de lis' and also in the multiple rosettes in the rim of the frame.
