Four Antique Hand Painted & Gilt Wooden Church Panel Paintings of Famous Saints

About the Item

Rare and beautiful quality, hand painted saints from circa 1900. When you are decorating a home, monastery or church then there is nothing better than using authentic antique religious art. This group of four saints consists of Saint Elizabeth, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Saint Francis Xavier and Saint Henricus II. They are all hand painted and the artist, whom we may never know by name, clearly was an accomplished painter. We say this, because particularly the quality of the faces and hands of these saints are much better than average. Besides that, the body postures and also the colors and the shades in the 'robes' are of a quality that tell us that these paintings are the work of a seasoned professional. These striking church panels were once part of a larger work of art, which is why the first two letters of the saint's names are missing and you can also see that four upper corners have been replaced. Luckily the four corners too were part of the original, larger piece so they have the exact same gilding. These saints all have a gilt plaster halo in relief and they all are hand painted on solid oak panels. Apart from some minor wear to the paint (consistent with age and use) all four saints are in good to very good condition. You can put them on display as they are, but one could also have them framed, either together or individually. We found it difficult to price these unique antique paintings, because you just don't find this kind of quality and beauty. However, we prefer them to stay together and we have priced them in such a way that they can also go to a private collector, to a church or to a monastery with a more modest budget.
