2 Baroque 18th Century Carved Polychrome Decorated Wooden Continental Figurines

About the Item

A pair of 18th century carved wooden figurines Likely Central European originating somewhere in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, or Northern Italy. Both figurines depict a gallant gentleman in period dress holding a basket replete with fruit or flowers. Each is mounted on an integral wooden base with a rocaille base. These figures are rare and are a fine addition to any period room! Date: 18th century Overall condition: They are in overall fair, as-pictured, used estate condition. Both figures have some losses. One lacks an arm and sections of its hat. The other lacks sections of its hat. The second figurine has had its head re-secured. Each base has likely had some losses to an edge. There are spots of loss to the paint and gilding decoration throughout both with some surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Marks: One figure retains an old glued sticker to the reverse. Measurements: Height: ca. 7 1/2 in. Width: ca. 4 1/2 in. Depth: ca. 2 3/4 in. Height: ca. 6 7/8 in. Width: 4 1/8 in. Depth: 2 1/4 in.     A fine antique of the colony of Pennsylvania. Noted at the top of the sheet as a 'Map of the province of Pensilvania'. This undated and anonymous map is thought to be from the Gentleman's Magazine, London, circa 1775, although the general appearance could date it to the 1760's. The southern boundary reflects the Mason-Dixon survey (1768), the western boundary is placed just west of Pittsburgh, and the northern boundary is not marked. The map has a number of reference points that likely refer to companion text and appear to be connected to boundaries. The western and southern boundaries are marked Q, R, S, for example. A diagonal line runs from the Susquehanna R to the Lake Erie P. A broken line marked by many letters A, B, N, O, etc., appears in the east. There are no latitude or longitude markings, blank verso.
