Ship Log signed John Bliss & Co. 1880

Traffail ship Log, brass, signed John Bliss & Co. Patented Nov. 15 1864, made in USA in 1880 circa, complete with a small propeller. It is an instrument used to measure the speed and the distance traveled by a ship using a dial with three scales on enamelled sheet. Very good condition and in order. Length of propeller 39 cm - 15.35 inches, width 16 cm - inches 6.29; lenght of log 28 cm - 11 inches, diameter 7.5 cm - 2.95 inches. Base included cm 39x17.5x20 - inches 15.35x6.88x7.87. In the past centuries the attempt to measure the speed of the ships was especially hindered by the lack of tools for the measurement of time of sufficient precision: throwing a piece of wood into the sea from the bow of a ship and measuring the time it took to get at the stern, it was possible to obtain some information on the speed of the ship, but with many errors and inaccuracies. The principle of mechanical patent log was shown to the Royal Society in 1699 by Robert Hooke, but the first model produced for commercial use was patented just in 1802 by Edward Massey. John Bliss & Co. marine chronometers and nautical instruments began its business in 1835 trading under the name Bliss & Creighton oJohn Bliss & Co. marine chronometers and nautical in Fulton St. New York. Some years later the name was changed into "John Bliss & Co.". Shipping in insured by Lloyd's London and the gift box is free (look at the last picture).
