"Washington and His Generals" by A. H. Ritchie, circa 1870

About

This beautifully detailed lithograph of Washington and His Generals by Alexander Hay Ritchie was published in New York City by Emil Seitz, circa 1870. The work is engraved with the title, publisher, and artist name in the bottom margin. In the print, George Washington is the central standing figure looking around purposefully at his men. Sitting in a neoclassical style room and forming a semicircle around Washington are his various generals. The scene is meant to recreate Washington’s Farewell to his generals at Fraunces Tavern in New York City. In 1783, only a few months after the end of the Revolutionary War and the British evacuated, Washington gathered his generals at a tavern where many early revolutionaries met to announce his retirement. Washington planned to leave the public sphere and return to his beloved Mt. Vernon and live out his days as a “gentleman farmer.” The teary-eyed Washington proclaimed to a room full of his friends, “With a heart full of love and gratitude, I now take leave of you.” Unknown at the time, it would only be six years before the Father of Our Country was called out of retirement to serve as the first President of the United States. Many famous faces are clearly identified in Ritchie’s engraving such as Alexander Hamilton seated at the table behind Washington, G. M. Lafayette sitting in a chair in the left foreground, and Naval Commodore Paul Jones just behind Lafayette. Ritchie was well-known for his clarity and richness in engravings, making his historical figures easily identifiable. The standing portrait of Washington is most likely adapted from the full length statue by Houdon in Richmond, Virginia. The artist did many drawings and engravings of various important American figures such as Lincoln, U. S. Grant, and Frederick Douglass and was considered one of the best historical print-makers of the mid-19th century. This re-creation of an important moment in the history of the nascent United States is above average quality and provides wonderful portraits of the men who helped to win the war. Condition: Overall age appropriate condition. Some soiling throughout, especially at the lower left corner. Occasional creases and abrasions, but overall the 1870s work is in very good condition. The piece is framed in an elegant black and gold frame according to modern archival standards.
