The Ordeal of the Hermitage, The Siege of Leningrad 1941-1944. Leningrad: Aurora Art Publishers, 1985. First edition hardcover with dust jacket. 302 pp. A beautifully photographed book on Russia's premier museum and how for 900 days and nights the people of Russia withstood the savage onslaughts of the Nazi invaders. The book chronicles the heroic and desperate efforts to save the museums treasures from the invaders. After the first German attack in 1941 the staff of the Hermitage had just 6 days to pack the first shipment to be transported by rail far to the east beyond the Ural Mountains. Another million items were prepared to be stored in the dank cellars of the museum while the museum's staff remained there through the shelling guarding the treasures. NPT Books, a division of N.P.
