Franklin D. Roosevelt 1936 Campaign Poster: "The Man with a Heart..."
About the Item
“THE MAN WITH A HEART, THE PARTY WITH A SOUL”: FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT POSTER, MADE FOR HIS 1936 PRESIDENTIAL RUN, THE BEST OF ALL KNOWN EXAMPLES ACROSS ALL FOUR OF THE FDR CAMPAIGNS, EXTREMELY RARE AND WITH WHAT IS PERHAPS THE BEST SLOGAN IN 19TH OR 20TH AMERICAN POLITICS
Large scale presidential Campaign poster, printed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1936 for Franklin D. Roosevelt’s run that year for the White House. Across all of FDR’s four successful campaigns, in 1932, 1936, 1940, and 1944, this is undoubtedly the best example. With wonderful colors and graphics, it is also exceedingly rare and this is one of just three examples that I am aware to have survived from one of America’s most well-remembered presidents, who served in office longer than any other and steered the nation through the Second World War.
Along the top and bottom registers, in bold and interesting script-style lettering, is a two part slogan that reads: “The Man with a Heart; The Party with a Soul.” Without question, this is the best Campaign slogan that I have personally encountered on any American political item in American history. One can imagine this message, being delivered to an American populous reeling from the pain of the stock market crash and the great depression.
Below the upper register is an image of FDR between two stars. The portrait sketch bears a 1933 copyright and the signature of the artist.
Beneath this are the words “Vote Straight Democratic for All Roosevelt Candidates,” accompanied by a large “X.”
The colors are red, white, and blue throughout, which is a very positive trait for a political object as not all were in a patriotic scheme. The graphics are terrific.
There are tiny brass grommets in each corner. The “Union Bug” (denoting that the poster was printed with union labor) appears in the lower right-hand corner. This identifies it as having been produced in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Mounting: This is a pressure mount between 100% cotton twill, black in color, and U.V. protective acrylic. The black fabric was washed and treated to reduce and set the dye. The black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed molding is Italian.
Condition: There is some edge wear around the perimeter with minor associated loss. In one area along the left edge there is a small patch of similar colored parchment to underlay two very small chips. There is modest foxing and staining and there are small tack holes in each corner. Overall condition is excellent for a poster of this era and especially one of this stature.

- 1912 Roosevelt Turkey Red Bandana, ca 1912Located in York County, PATurkey red bandanna, made for the 1912 presidential campaign of teddy Roosevelt, when he ran on the independent, progressive party (bull moose) ticket Printed cotton kerchief, made for the 1912 presidential campaign of Theodore Roosevelt when he ran on the Progressive Party ticket (a.k.a., the Bull Moose campaign). This graphic textile, in a classic, western style, typical of the iconic red bandanna, is indicative of both the Republican Party in the late 19th century, and T.R.’s love of the American West. In this example, a geometric design with diamonds, surrounded by multiple, linear borders, is accompanied by the following text along the top and bottom that reads: “The Roosevelt Bandanna” and “Progressive Party,” respectively. A maker’s mark in the lower right corner reads “Cochranes Mfg. Co.” Cochrane’s was known for their long-lasting, red dye process, called “Cochrane’s Turkey Red.”. It was really a process, as opposed to a dye itself, to which the name applied. The dye was actually a derived from a synthetic colorant called “alizarin,” imported by Alexander Cochrane’s family, who emigrated to the United States from 1847, and owned a chemical company in Massachusetts that produced the dye. The fabrics were produced by the family of John Cochrane, who emigrated from Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1844. Both families, who resided in Malden, Massachusetts initially, traced their ancestry to Barrhead, Scotland, in the heart of the textile-producing region, near Glasgow and Paisley. It was in Glascow that Turkey Red printed bandannas are said to have originated, in the shop of Henry Monteith & Company, in 1802.* TR's decision to enter the 1912 election was not exactly popular among many of his friends and former supporters. His participation manifested into a unique political incident, in which the independent, Roosevelt, beat out a major party ticket, garnering 27.4% of the vote. At the same time, however, he lost the White House, not only for himself, but for his former Republican friends as well, by dividing support between his own candidacy and that of incumbent President William Howard Taft...Category
