About

The Last Country Houses by Clive Aslet. New Haven: Yale University Press. First edition hardcover with dust jacket, 1982. 344 pp. The social and architectural history of the prosperous era in Great Britain between 1890 and 1939. The book describes the clients, the architects, the styles and the accoutrements of the country houses. The people who could afford them–the Carnegies, the Astors, and the Leverhulmes, had grown rich by exploiting the new economic opportunities of the age. There were two contrasting ways of life, the social, and the romantic country house. The social country house was the setting of the opulent world associated with Edward VII and the romantic country house was simpler and more rural. NPT Books, a division of N.P. Trent Antiques, has a large collection of used and out of print books on art, architecture, decoration and antiques with a focus on 1st editions, signed and limited editions.
