Illustrated in both black and white and color the book is divided into four parts, Medicean Villas, Villas in and near Florence, Villas near Lucca and Sienese Villas. The author Harold Acton was brought up and still lives in a restored 15th-c Tuscan Villa. He quotes in his memoirs ''In Italian, villa signifies not house alone, but house and pleasure grounds combined.''
