About

Billingsley, Amos Stevens. From the Flag to the Cross; or Scenes and Incidents of Christianity in the War. Philadelphia: New World Publishing Company, 1872. Original embossed brown leather boards with gilt pictorial details and titled to covers and spine. Presented with a new archival brown cloth slipcase. Presented is the 1872 printing of From the Flag to the Cross: or, Scenes and Incidents of Christianity in the War by A. S. Billingsley. The book is an exploration of the role Christianity played in the lives of Union soldiers who fought in the Civil War. Published not ten years after the conflict ended, the book offers a unique perspective of the conflict that is both theological and intimately personal, as Billingsley served as Chaplain to the 101st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. The subtitle to this book is "The conversions, prayers, dying requests, last words, sufferings and deaths of our soldiers, on the battlefield, in hospital, camp and prison and a description of distinguished Christian men and their labors." The title of the book, From the Flag to the Cross, was taken from a letter written from a dying soldier to his brother in which he commends his allegiance to the Flag but urges him to the highest allegiance to the Cross of Jesus Christ. Amos Stevens Billingsley was born in 1818, in Columbiana County, Ohio. He was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister in 1854 and pastored the Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church in Lawrence County until 1857. He travelled west as a missionary by the Presbyterian Home Board of Missions and ministered in the Colorado gold fields from 1861-1862. In 1861 he was elected Chaplain of the Colorado House of Representatives. In 1863, he was assigned as Chaplain of the 101st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. He mustered in January of 1864 and was captured April 20th, 1864 at Plymouth, North Carolina. Billingsley was held captive at the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. After the war, he and his wife settled in Statesville, North Carolina, where he pastored at the colored Presbyterian Church. Reverend Billingsley died in 1897 in Statesville, NC.
