U.S. Infantry Tactics, for the Instruction, Exercise, and Manoeuvres of the United States Infantry, Including Infantry of the Line, Light Infantry, and Riflemen. Prepared under the Direction of the War Department, and Authorized and Adopted by the Secretary of War, May 1, 1861. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1861. First edition. In original green cloth binding with gilt stamps and titles. Presented with new archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell with well. This is the first edition printing of U.S. Infantry Tactics. Prepared under the Direction of the War Department and authorized and adopted by the Secretary of War on May 1, 1861, this book offers detailed infantry tactics, definitions, and instruction for the Union soldiers at the outbreak of the Civil War. Profusely illustrated throughout, the book has 77 plates, several folding, of illustrations, diagrams, and even music. The subtitle of U.S. Infantry Tactics, “Containing the School of the Soldier; the School for the Company; Instruction for Skirmishers; the General Calls, the Calls for Skirmishers, and the School of the Battalion; including the Articles of War and a Dictionary of Military Terms.” gives insight into the thorough and complete nature of this military manual. Condition: Very good condition. 12mo. 449pp. 77 plates (including folding plates), music. In original green cloth binding with gilt stamps and titles. Boards have light bumping, but otherwise in good condition. Interior pages are healthy, with only scattered and minimal foxing or discoloration. Presented with new archival ¼ green leather and cloth clamshell with well. Clamshell has gilt titles and decoration to spine and inlaid illustration of a soldier on the front.
