China from the West by David Howard and John Ayers. London: Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications. First edition hard cover in two volumes with slip case, 1978. 1048 pp. A retrospective of Chinese export porcelain and other decorative arts from the Mottahedeh Collection. Detailed analysis of porcelains produced for Western markets with over seven hundred illustrations showing the unusual forms, their decorative style and traditions and their relationships with distant clients in the West. It also covers other export goods; painted enamels, carvings in ivory or soapstone and reverse paintings on glass. The Mottahedeh collection has a clear-sighted purpose providing an ideal foundation for such a study. Signed and inscribed by the by both authors. The book is accompanied by a letter from his wife, Angela, telling friends of the death of her husband David, the author, in 2005. NPT Books, a division of N.P. Trent Antiques, has a large collection of used and out of print books on art, architecture, decoration and antiques with a focus on 1st editions, signed and limited editions.
