This fourth volume was preceded by the 1917 A Son of the Middle Border, the 1922 Pulitzer Prize winning A Daughter of the Middle Border, and the 1926 Trail-Makers of the Middle Border. In this final book of his "Border" Series, Garland recounts his meetings and relationships with many famous writers in England, including Kipling, Barrie, and Shaw, as well as his relationships with President Roosevelt, William Dean Howells, and many others. This book is signed by Hamlin Garland at the end of the forward. It is has a dated inscription on the half-title by Garland that reads, "One of the chief honors gained by back-trailing was the friendship of Theodore Roosevelt, a friendship shared by Julian Street." Julian Street (1879-1947) was an American author, reporter, and friend of Theodore Roosevelt, writing a biography of him in 1915, titled, The Most Interesting American. A gift inscription, "To J.S. from S.W.C. 4/7/29" is penned on the recto of the frontispiece.
