Bankes Obelisk, England, Ashford Black Marble, First Half of the 19th Century

So-called Bankes obelisk made of black marble ("Ashford Black"), after the obelisk of Philae, which William John Bankes acquired shortly afterwards after his discovery on the same island in 1815. Beautiful decorative condition. Lit: Exhibition catalogue Pyramids Fascination, Vaduz 2017, p. 249 (with switched illustration on p. 250).
